Charlotte is the home of NASCAR which was founded by Bill France Sr. Big Bill ran the organization until 1972 when he turned it over to his son. He died in 1992 at the age of 82 from Alzheimer’s Disease. The Purple Ball at Birkdale Golf Club was played for Bill France Sr.
