While I have met people on my golf journey who have told me about their loved one’s battle with Alzheimer’s, my wife, Maggie has met people too. Last week, she met Mr. Lee Melahn who lives in New York and Madison, WI. Lee’s mother, Florence Elizabeth Melahn, lived life with verve and fun. She loved to play practical jokes on her children placing fake fruit in their lunches. Florence greeted all of her customers at the Milk Depot or Light Haus in Madison with warmth and a smile. Importantly, according to her son, Lee, Mrs. Melahn left her children with a traveling suitcase filled with goofiness, a sense that being different is better than being average and no one is exempt from a good laugh. The Purple Ball at Whispering Pines was played for Florence Elizabeth Melahn.
